St Catherines Reef, 19/08/07
Title: St Catherines Reef, 19/08/07

Description: First dive on a twinset, nice deep dive first followed by a shallow bimble with a dry suit orientation student (who has more dive experience than I). Lots of life about, didn't stop to photograph the little dogfish and dragonette on our way to 38m.

Conger Alley 05/08/07
Title: Conger Alley 05/08/07

Description: Two good dives with Tom "spanish dancer" Bates. Found a few congers and filmed them (the few photos I took of the congers didn't turn out that great). Also, my first encounter with a Dragonet. Video clips to be posted on youtube eventually.

Twin Piers, 26/07/07
Title: Twin Piers, 26/07/07

Description: Evening dive. Weather had been moderately good all day but rained buckets as we unloaded the van. As soon as we were in our dry suits it lifted leaving a rainbow over Arrochar. David and I entered the water first and made our way out between the two piers down to 6m and then turned up the loch and finned down to 20m max depth. Along the way we stopped to watch the flatfish swimming and various anemones, crabs and starfish. Mostly a sandy bottom except for blanket of empty muscle shells. Heading up the slope we happened upon a patch of poor visibility only to realise it was another group of divers. We had turned up the slope at the right time and found the wreck however as the group of 3 were kicking up a storm we passed them for the boulders and massive blocks which made up a reef. While inspecting some anemone David found a conger hiding under a big boulder. One photo and it had retreated so I went back to taking photos of the anemones. David flashed his torch my direction to alert me that the conger was back and I settled down on a rock with torch in one hand and camera in the other. I snapped away as the conger slowly came out of his hole. Then the conger decided to turn and investigate me, heading straight for the camera. I retracted my arm slightly and the conger turned his attention on my torch instead, coming right up and bumping it with his nose. The conger returned back to his hole and then repeated this again. I managed to get a few reasonable shots out of the many I took (mostly out of focus or the torch-light was poorly placed), having the flash off left the scene unevenly lit but if I had left it on the scatter from the particles in the water would have blinded the scene. David motioned to me that he had 100Bar left so we made our way up the reef and stopped at 5m to do our safety stop. While there I noticed a starfish moving along the sand and took a (rather long) video. A few small fish popped into frame and promptly left. We swam back towards our entry point in the shallows (around 3m) over beds of seaweed. Keeping an eye for any interesting signs of life. Occasionally a small hermit crab would suddenly drop off a leaf of seaweed and roll away, they seem to shoot into their shells at such a speed as to cause the shell to start rolling. Back at the piers I took some time investigating the posts and took a few photos. There were a fair number of starfish at the bottom of the pier legs. An exciting dive despite the variable visibility and worth a return visit to get to the wreck first.
