Capernwray 22/03/08
Title: Capernwray 22/03/08

Description: Our second trip to Capernwray, an inland quarry in the north of England. Tom and Scott joined us to bring the group up to 5. We had some interesting weather on the way down with glorious sunshine throughout the drive to the border and shortly after crossing we were met with a brick wall of cloud. As we drew closer to Capernwray this cleared a little to let the sun shine through. At the site we kitted up in the 22mph winds and snow showers (well it might not have been 22mph but that's what was forecast). First dive we didn't quite follow the bearings right (my fault) but we saw the stuff we went in to see. Ambient light level was excellent and visibility was reasonable so we never turned a torch on once. Fish were very friendly and made for an interesting safety stop. Second dive we were better prepared with our directions and hit the helicopter in no time at all. From the helicopter we went on to see the HMS Podsnap followed by another wreck (didn't catch the name) and then The Answer. Lots of photos, especially of my buddies and we even got a group photo as we exited care of a kind gentleman on the shore.

Akka (wreck), Clyde, 16/03/08
Title: Akka (wreck), Clyde, 16/03/08

Description: Two fantastic dives to the Akka in the Clyde from the hardboat Clutha. Unfortunately I forgot to replace the memory card in my camera and as a result ended up with only a handful of photos before the internal memory was filled. Was a shame though as we saw a lot of life, almost every surface of the wreck was covered in a seething blanket of bristlestars. Several ropes which hung off the side of the wreck were three times the normal diameter due to the number of bristlestars clinging to them. In addition to the bristlestars an amazing number of anemones of various shapes and sizes, sea loch anemones (as I know them), Plumrose anemones, dahlia anemones and many more different spiecies. Saw two edible crabs, neither were big by Loch Long/ Loch Fyne standards, and a cod or ling passing at a distance. Few tompot blennies and a jellyfish similar to last Sundays. Diving with Donny, first dive was down the shot line, onto the port side and down to the walkway swimthrough (only possible as the "windows" are massive and most of the overhead steel had disappeared with rust). Down to the stern and over the side, down the hull and a few minutes spent on the rudder before returning up the hull to the walkways and back to the midship. Sent up an smb and safety stop for 5mins at 6m (was greatful we didn't do our stop any shallower as the 5m - surface was <1m vis and potentially colder). Second dive was similar, straight down the shot to midship, a little disorientated and (in hindsight) over the starboard edge to follow the edge/walkways to the stern (we had planned to hit the port side and follow it to the bow but it wasn't until we reached the stern that I realised what had happened). Still, we managed to meet Willie and Debbie at the base of the shot line midship and then again at the safety stop in 6m.
